A thaw has set in, but skiing on the course is going on

( 23. 12. 2009 )
The biggest Slovenian ski resort on Mariborsko Pohorje has the thickest snow cover just on the course for the Golden Fox competitions. In the last days 65 snow guns have produced a 40 cm thick snow cover.

The town of  Maribor got a new Gondola, and lost the snow. But from the top of the Pohorje mountain down to the valley a long, snow white winding path can be seen! There are still 23 days till the 46th Golden Fox and there is already a 40 cm thick layer of snow on the course!

But, is it going to stay? "Every year we are having a thaw at Christmas time," was a relaxed comment of Mr. Gorazd Bedrač, Chief of Race, "it is just a question, how long does it last. The thaw  has also a positive aspect. The water basins, that emptied during the snow making, are going to fill up again."

After the New Year there will be sufficient time for the course, the cold weather and for the snow, because the 46th Golden Fox is on schedule one week later than usually. At the time being the OC is more busy with an offer of the FIS. A third race in Maribor, on Friday, January 15, 2010 – the transfer of the cancelled GS race of Val d´Isere?

Srečko Vilar, Secretary general of the OC: "We are going to do everything for our skiers. Two giant slalom races  on the site, where Tina Maze last year was the winner, just before the Olympic games... Accommodation is possible, we are going to do our best, FIS is going to transfer the race to one of the classic WC organizers. Of course, everything defends on the snow conditions and the marketing contracts."
