On Wednesday, Mikaela secured her second Audi FIS World Cup giant slalom double of her career in Semmering, and at the age of 27, she is now just four wins away from surpassing Lindsey Vonn to become the most successful female World Cup skier. From second place, behind World Champion in the giant slalom Lara Gut-Behrami (SUI), Shiffrin put in a masterful afternoon performance in the second run, finishing in a total time of 2:03.51, enough to clinch her 79th World Cup title. Switzerland's Gut-Behrami held on to second place by a tenth of a second despite a difficult second run, while Marta Bassino maintained her lead in the overall season standings in the giant slalom as she claimed her sixth consecutive podium finish.
The American superstar now has her sights set on Lindsey Vonn's record mark of 82 World Cup titles, with only one more milestone to go; Ingemar Stenmark (SWE) and his 86th career World Cup victory. Whether Vonn will be able to threaten her title in January will also be decided at the 59th Golden Fox in Kranjska Gora in just over a week.
