Atle Skaardal about slalom cancellation‘’Unfortunately, it didn’t work. The crew put in so much effort, but the race course is in such a condition, that it is impossible to carry through the race. The snow crystals are so big, that the surface is solid, but underneath is soft snow. I’m very sad, because a lot of hard work was invested, but the nature couldn’t have been beaten this time. After our first course inspection this morning we tried with some corrections but it didn’t help. Today, there were no actual chances to carry out the slalom race. We used a lot of water, but the snow structure is such, that the snow is practically dead. Congratulations to the organizers, they did everything they could in this situation.’’
Gorazd Bedrač, Chief of race:"All our last days efforts unfortunately didn't work. At 5 in the morning we already checked the race course and decided to take additional measures to improve the snow structure, but we didn't succeed. The snow structure that was restored during the night wasn't solid enough to enable at least similar conditions for all the competitors. It was a logic consequence to cancel the race then. Yesterday, the race course was in such condition, that it enabled the race, but then it turned out after some time, that we couldn't ensure secure racing. Today, there's a whole different story. The preparation was such, that it didn't enable the race."
Srečko Vilar, secretary general of the Organizing Committee, after the slalom cancellation:“The race jury decided right after the morning inspection at 5.00 to carry out some additional corrections on the race course. At 7.00 they inspected the course again and saw that all that additional work didn’t help, the preparation didn’t work. The upper snow layer is solid, but only the upper 15 centimeters, which wouldn’t be enough for the race realization. The course would perhaps hold for the first 15 racers only, which isn’t enough. That is the reason why the jury reached the decision to cancel the race and we have to accept that. We did everything, but weren’t lucky. Everything we tried turned out to be ineffective in this warm weather. We are sad, exhausted, disappointed, but at least we know, that we tried everything that was in our power.’’
