It was a beautiful and sunny day, such as there are many in Maribor, when in 1963 Marjan Kožuh and Franci Čop, together with other skiing enthusiasts, decided to send Dušan Senčar to Europe to "recruit" international female competitors for the first Pohorje Cup in 1964. And the following year, history was made. Sixty years of wonderful sports stories were created beneath Pohorje, forced by weather conditions to take place 11 times in Kranjska Gora, once in Sarajevo, and once in Bad Gastein, among other locations. The Golden Fox (Zlata lisica) was the venue where, for the first time in the history of women's alpine skiing, giant slalom was held in two runs (1972). There are countless stories told by ski workers.
The jubilee, the 60th edition of the Golden Fox, the most prestigious women's alpine skiing competition of the season, will take place here between January 6th and 7th, 2024. On the slopes of Vitranca in Kranjska Gora, the world's best alpine skiers will compete for the fastest time, creating a magical atmosphere alongside the course with the biggest ski enthusiasts. Slovenian representatives will also compete; the final list of our "foxes" has not been confirmed yet, but the most is certainly expected from Ana Bucik, Andreja Slokar, Meta Hrovat, Neja Dvornik, and younger Slovenian representatives. The home turf and the sight of Slovenian flags in the finish line will undoubtedly provide them with an additional advantage.
Back home in Slovenia
After numerous questions and doubts about whether we will find the Golden Fox in this year's calendar of skiing events in Slovenia, we have a definite answer today. Thanks to the efforts of the Ski Association of Slovenia, the Golden Fox remains at home, in Slovenia. This year's competition will not only be marked by the slogan "Back home in Slovenia." In addition to being the most important sporting event of the season, the event will also be a great celebration and a true skiing festival. The Ski Association of Slovenia organizes the competition with the desire and intention to keep these important FIS World Cup races in women's alpine skiing in Slovenia and, at the same time, strives for conditions that will allow the Golden Fox to return home, beneath Pohorje, in the future.
On Saturday, January 6th, when the giant slalom takes place, the competitors will race through the gates at 9:30, and the second run will follow at 12:30. Between the first and second runs, the audience will be further entertained by the performance of Magnifico. The Sunday slalom on January 7th will also start at 9:30, with the second run at 12:30. A rich accompanying program is also expected between the runs.
